Thoughts About Fathers

“A good father will leave his imprint on his daughter for the rest of her life.”
– Dr. James Dobson

“Every father should remember one day his son will follow his example, not his advice.”
– Charles Kettering

Fathers Shape the Future

With Father’s Day approaching, let’s look at the lasting impact of fathers – whether good or bad. Boys learn how to be a man and how to treat women. For girls, Dr. James Dobson says, “a father holds the keys to his daughter’s feminine identity, her sense of self-worth, and her future relationships.” Even though life sometimes throws curves that force one parent into both roles, moms simply can’t replace the influence of a good dad or positive male role model. When writing my characters – whether they are well-rounded or badly damaged – both parents have a vital role. The father in my next book influenced more than his own child.

A Dead Father Rescues

Frankie Shep’s father had the kind of influence on her that a father should. He’s gone now, but she puts the lessons he taught her into practice on a daily basis, like in this excerpt from Choir Loft Murder, now on pre-order:

A black circle was closing in on Frankie’s already blurry vision. Control yourself. It was her dead father’s voice inside her head. He’d get her out of this.

It took all her concentration to prop the gun on a leg to steady it. Tears streamed down her face, but she couldn’t let go of the gun to wipe them away. Take a deep breath, her father’s voice instructed inside her head.
